What makes up the 8.25%
Taxable sales inside the Crockett city limits carry 8.25% in sales tax. The City of Crockett's part is 1.5%.4
| Who gets it | Rate | On $100 |
|---|---|---|
| State of Texas | 6.25%4 | $6.25 |
| City of Crockett, general purposes | 1.00% derived | $1.00 |
| City of Crockett, economic development half-cent (Type A, since Oct. 1, 1995) | 0.50%6 | $0.50 |
| Houston County | 0.50%4,7 | $0.50 |
| Total in the city limits | 8.25%4 | $8.25 |
- The Comptroller lists the City's local rate as 1.5% (local code 2113013) in every month of its file since 2013.5 Of that, 0.5% is the Type A economic and industrial development tax, in effect since Oct. 1, 1995.6 The 1% general line is derived: 1.5% less 0.5%.
- The state's 6.25% is the rest of the 8.25% total once the local rates are taken out.4
- Crockett voters approved ending the economic development half-cent in November 2024, but the Comptroller has not posted a rate change for Crockett. See The gaps.
Where the money goes
The Comptroller sends the City one payment a month for its whole 1.5%.1 Its files do not say how that payment divides between the City's own budget and the economic development half-cent.6 The City's annual audits do, reporting the half-cent under CEIDC, the City's Type A economic development corporation.
- FY2025 (Oct 2024 to Sep 2025): the Comptroller paid $2,382,707.1 The audit counts $1,588,471 as the City's share and $794,236 as CEIDC's.9
- FY2024 (Oct 2023 to Sep 2024): the Comptroller paid $2,234,076.1 The audit counts $1,489,384 as the City's share and $744,692 as CEIDC's.10
- In each of those years the two audited amounts add up to what the Comptroller paid, to the dollar: two-thirds to the City and one-third to CEIDC, the same proportions as the 1% general rate and the half-cent.
- The City's FY2027 budget worksheet shows a “City Sales Tax” line with $1,588,471.38 actual for 2025, and a line labeled “EDC Sales Tax (new account)” with $808,718 proposed for 2027.11
- The chart above shows each payment whole. No public record splits it month by month.
How Texas local sales tax works
- A business inside the city limits charges 8.25% on taxable sales: 6.25% for the state, 1.5% for the City of Crockett and 0.5% for Houston County.4
- The business sends the tax it collected to the Texas Comptroller with its sales tax return.
- The Comptroller keeps the state's share and pays each city and county its local share on a published schedule.2 In the Comptroller's words, those payments “generally represent taxes collected on sales made two months or more prior to the allocation payment date.”3
- The City of Crockett gets one payment for its share. Houston County is paid separately for its own.7
What this measures
- Each figure is the net payment the Texas Comptroller sent the City of Crockett that month. It is filed under the month the City was paid, not the month the sales were made.1
- A payment reflects sales made about two months earlier. In the Comptroller's words, payments "generally represent taxes collected on sales made two months or more prior to the allocation payment date."3
- The payment covers the City's whole 1.5% local rate, the half-cent for economic development included. The Comptroller's files do not split it; the City's annual audits do.4,9
- One-time spikes (October 2013; April-August 2019) are likely audit collections or late payments, not a jump in shopping. The 12-month total smooths them out.1
- City fiscal years run October 1 to September 30. A fiscal-year total adds up the payments made in those twelve months.9
- Houston County's half-cent, the hotel occupancy tax and the mixed-beverage tax are paid separately and are not counted here.7

The gaps
- Payments before January 2013 are not in the Comptroller's open-data file.1
- The Comptroller does not publish how each payment divides between the City's own share and the economic development half-cent. This page shows that split only for the fiscal years whose audits report it (2024 and 2025).9,10
- The Comptroller's payment detail, which breaks out audit and late collections month by month, starts in January 2022, so the 2013 and 2019 spikes cannot be broken down from open data.3
- In the November 5, 2024 election, Crockett voters approved ending CEIDC and replacing its half-cent economic development sales tax with a half-cent sales tax for property tax relief. The City's FY2025 audit says the half-cent continues until the CEIDC and USDA obligations are paid. As of 28 Sept 2026 the Comptroller still lists Crockett's local rate at 1.5%, and its rate-change report has no Crockett entry. The rate table on this page follows the Comptroller.5,8,9
